The small bay, which the Greeks called &#8220;Agios Nikolaos&#8221; (St. Nicholas) since ancient times, has the shape of a sea horseshoe, with the opening facing north. It was he who gave the name to the settlement, Chernomorets until 1951 it was called Sveti Nikola. For ideological reasons, the name was changed, but after the political changes at the end of the 1980s, it was not restored. To the east are the island of Saint Ivan and Sozopol. The city is located on beautiful shores, with Vromos Bay nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Chernomorets is characterized by a mild and humid climate, mild winter, late spring and pleasant warm summer. Annual sunshine is 2100-2200 hours, summer water temperatures are 20-26 C, and air temperatures reach 32 C.<\/p>\n<p>In the area of Chernomorets there is one protected area &#8211; &#8220;Cape Chervenka&#8221; (2 ha) &#8211; declared in 1973 with the aim of preserving rock formations and protecting the natural habitats of protected and rare species.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism is a key factor for the economic development and efficiency of the city. The town of Chernomorets is one of the main destinations in the municipality of Sozopol along the Southern Black Sea coast for summer &#8220;recreational&#8221; and cultural tourism. In recent years, the city has been characterized by rapid and intensive construction, and according to recent statistical studies, the bed base exceeds 15,000.[3] For the recreation of tourists, the city offers many restaurants, two night bars, a children&#8217;s park, a city park with an open gym. Lovers of cultural and cognitive tourism can get acquainted with the thousand-year-old history and traditions of the city by visiting the new local museum, the church &#8220;St. Nicholas&#8221;, the adjacent chapels and the restored early Byzantine fortress of Acre. The city also offers maritime educational trips to the islands of St. Anastasia and St. Ivan. With a population of 4,317 people according to data from the Census as of February 1, 2011, it is located in the Burgas district and is the administrative center of the Sozopol Municipality. The distance to Burgas is 34 km.<\/p>\n<p>It is the successor of the Greek colony Apollonia and together with Nessebar is one of the oldest Bulgarian cities. From antiquity to the 17th century, Sozopol was a thriving commercial center. It is known as a fishing and wine center and occupies an important place in the grain trade of Thrace.
